• 大山背 (Da shan bei) (9 items)
  

  On the only nice day of Chinese New Year we spontaneously decided to go to 大山背 (Da shan bei), a mountain (okay, it's really a hill but Taiwan has different standards ;-) in the area. So, we rode the scooter to the 樂善堂 (Le shan temple) which is the starting point of the 大崎棟桐花步道 ("Da qi dong Paulownia flower hiking trail") that leads to the top. Even though it was still somewhat foggy the view was quite nice. And after a week of rain and thick fog you take what you get!

  When we saw a few rays of sun at the beginning of the Chinese New Year vacation, for which the worst weather immaginable was forecast, we immediately packed to hike up 觀音山 (Guan yin mountain). We took the bus to the 凌雲寺 (Ling yun temple) where some of the hiking trails start. However, the weather got worse and worse on the way and we hiked deeper and deeper into the thick fog that even covered the top of the mountain. I guess we'll have to go back another day, so until then these are the only photos we have ...

  The Hsinchu Science Park administration does not normally stand out for doing good things that make people's lives more enjoyable. It seems in 2009 most energy went into the design of the Christmas decoration in front of their building instead of a more sophisticated traffic concept. Well, at least I got some nice photos out of it. :-)

  Photos from our bike trip to 宇老 (Yu lao) where we climbed a little more than 1,200 meters over 20 km distance. Parts of the road are really steep and the road quality isn't helping either but the view is worth it!

  Several times per year Taiwan's furniture manifacturers come together to show off the masterpieces of their design work. Not suitable for the faint of stomach, a small collection of photos.

  Hike along the 草嶺古道 (Cao ling ancient trail), which leads from 福隆 (Fu long) in Taipei county to 大里 (Da li) in Yilan county. This trail used to be the main connection between the two sides of the mountain range.

  This April I took a trip with my parents almost around the island. By HSR from 台北 (Taipei) to 高雄 (Gaoxiong), then to 墾丁 (Kenting), 台東 (Taidong), 花蓮 (Hualian), and finally back home via train along the North cost. Surprisingly good weather (luckily the forecast was as wrong as always) let me take many nice pictures. Enjoy!

  According to one of my colleagues 大屯山 (Da tuen shan) is one of the most beautiful sunsets in Taiwan. So, we took the rare opportunity of good weather in Taipei and hiked up to one of the highest peaks of the 陽明山 (Yang ming shan) area shortly before sunset. (You'll see some cars and scooters on those pictures but, unlike most of the others we did actually hike up from 768 to 1089 m. :-)

  My first real weekend in 台北 (Taipei) where we went to Taipei 101, currently the world's largest skyscraper, and 淡水 (Dàn Shuǐ). Dàn Shuǐ is a somewhat touristy place in the North West of Taipei but despite the masses of people it's very beautiful and the food on the nightmarket is amazing as always in Taiwan.

  Taking advantage of the beautiful weather I decided to go see what a Taiwanese beach looks like. There's a nice coastline complete with sand beach and a 17 km long bike trail less than an hour away from where I live. I was not disappointed. :-)

  After the recent drive along parts of Skyline Boulevard and last weekend's trip to Half Moon Bay this is another part of the Coast Line & Skyline Boulevard puzzle that I'm trying to complete. This time Loïc came along and we started at Pescadero Beach, went down to Santa Cruz and came back up on Highway 9 and Skyline Boulevard. Against all odds (or at least against all weather forecasts) it was a sunny day and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery of California's Pacific coast.

  What better on a February weekend than going to the beach? Heading up North West to the famous Half Moon Bay and driving down the coast line on Highway 1 I enjoyed a cross between a hike and a road trip on this warm and sunny Sunday.
